Samana
Location
Samana is located in the North-East corner of Dominican Republic, North of Punta Cana and East of Puerto Plata and borders the Atlantic Ocean. Considered to be one of the most beautiful destinations in Dominican Republic it remains mostly untouched by tourism. Weather The climate in Samana is considered moderate tropical with very few seasonal extremes which makes it ideal for travellers. The average temperature only sees a 5 degree variant between winter and summer due to its location on a peninsula. As with most Caribbean destinations the summer months often see an increase in afternoon thunder showers which pass by quickly and don’t put a “damper” on your day! Getting Around Through your tour operator your transfers to and from the airport are included if you have purchased a package. The peninsula is highly accessible by bus from other parts of the country such as Puerto Plata and private taxis can also be arranged. Currency The official currency is the Dominican Peso however US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas as well as the resorts. Language Spoken Spanish is the official language throughout the Dominican Republic so it doesn’t hurt to know a few phrases – although you will pick them up fast in destination. Most employees at resorts can speak English however it is not their first language. Electricity The standard electricity supply is 110 volts; therefore you will not need convertors if you are travelling from Canada or the US, unless you are bringing 220 volt devices (hotels will often offer convertors). Excursions El Limon waterfall is one of the most popular excursions in Samana and is located 20 kilometres from the Town. There is a restaurant located at the entrance where the trail begins. The only way to view the waterfall is by 30-45 minute hike since it is secluded. You can also take a horseback ride to the waterfall which takes 15 minutes. The area surrounding the waterfall in picturesque and offers many photo opportunities. The waterfall itself is 40 metres tall and falls into a natural pool of water below so bring your bathing suit! Whale watching is possible from mid January through the end of March. These excursions are best if booked ahead through your tour operator or resort. This is a unique opportunity to observe humpback whales in their natural habitat and you can also hear them! Visit your tour operator’s website for a more extensive list of what is available in Punta Cana. Shopping Shopping excursions can be booked through your tour operator or at your hotel to areas nearby that offer locally made items and souvenirs. Most boutiques and souvenir shops are located in Las Terrenas and Samana with a few in Las Galeras. Nightlife Samana is not a destination known to have an exciting nightlife however the resorts do offer evening entertainment. Golf If you would love to golf while staying in Samana it is possible! 2 hours from the resort area is the Playa Grande Golf Course which is a professionally designed course. |
